The information at this point has been taken from the Family Bible of John and Belle Daugherty and from the Burner history of Grandma’s parents.

Grandpa and Grandma Daugherty, John and Belle left Barbour County and moved to Denton County, Texas a short time after they were married. He has a brother by the name of Jacob Daugherty, living in the same area. I have heard my mother tell about Grandma Daugherty working in the cotton fields. According to dates, they were there for only a short period of time.Uncle Isiah was born there is 1883 and Anna G. was born in Barbour County in September of 1884. I think the reason for this short stay was due to health reasons and discontent by Grandpa, John.

They returned to Barbour County and lived on an 80 acre farm. The farm is now owned by Billy Jones, son of Delbert Jones. They built a new two story house on the property. I have heard my mother say that Grandpa (John) worked on the railroad for 50 cents a day to pay for house and farm. The said farm is located in the Union area, Philippi District, Barbour County. The house they built was destroyed by fire, probably 1951 or 1952.

Grandpa’s health began to fail and he was unable to do farm work. He died at our home in 1934. In 1935, we went to take care of her. In 1936, we brought her back to Mt. Liberty with us. She was with our family until her death in 1944.

The farm and the farm house were sold to Lloyd Burner, the highest bidder, around 1937. It was sold for some debts and taxes. My dad did not have the money to buy it.
